It is thrilling to celebrate your independence, but when you do, leave everyone else’s alone.

 

I have always believed in the promise of America.  I like the idea of all people being equal and opportunity being unlimited. Throughout my life, I have taken advantage of opportunities to be independent and choose the road I want for myself. Independence is commonly defined as not being controlled or influenced by others in things regarding conduct and opinion, thinking and/or acting for one’s self. It is truly a wonderful thing to be able to control your own destiny, to be able to pick and choose what you will do when you will do it and how you will get it done.

An interesting thing about the definition of independence is that it says nothing about bothering other people.

As a black, Christian, wife, mother and liberal, of course, I have my own interesting opinions about voting rights and the killing of young black men. I am fully aware of the fact that my opinions and beliefs may not be shared by others. I am okay with that. After all, for me, that is part of the beauty of America. We get to have opinions that are not shared by others. America is supposed to be the land of the free and the home of the brave. For me freedom is being able to be Janeane Michelle James Davis and being brave is having the courage to express my opinion and not having to take on the opinions of others.

For me, it is important that while celebrating our individuality, we understand that other people celebrating their individuality may not be carbon copies of us. And that is okay! In conclusion, it is thrilling to celebrate your independence, but when you do, leave everyone else’s alone. So, the question for you this thrilling day is how do you celebrate your independence?
