The Family that Works Together Stays Together

You can find serenity in having your children join the family business. While I have never been a traditional mommy blogger, I have always been proud to be a wife and mother who blogs. My children have always suggested article topics, sponsored posts to accept and design themes for the blog.  A few months ago, my son Peyton  joined the team at Janeane’s World  and started giving all kinds of suggestions for improving engagement and helping readers. In exchange for his assistance, he earns 10% of whatever is earned here. His younger sisters not to be outdone, decided they wanted to join the team as well.  My daughter Zahirah is now a photographer for Janeane’s World. Her twin Camille,  joined the team as our official Cuteness Ambassador. Currently, the twins are satisfied with a salary of $1.00 per month. Last but not least, my eldest daughter Euphoria who blogs at Black Girl Brown Sugar agreed to consult and guest post from time to time.  She has not asked for a salary. Perhaps the tuition we will be paying for the next four years to Spelman College caused her to show us mercy in the salary department.

It is a great thing to have your children join your business. Even if your children are young, it is a good idea to find a way to give them a role in your business. When your children know what your business is and feel a part of it, they are more likely to appreciate the work you do. In addition, when they feel that your business is indeed the family business, they are more likely to want the business to succeed. They are less likely to resent the time you spend at the business when they have a share of the profits. It was amazing to me how quickly my children warmed to the idea of getting a paycheck from my business. My son, negotiated earning a portion of income from my book sales as well. I am on schedule to publish a new e-book on the 15th of each month for the foreseeable future, so the future looks bright for him.  The twins had a conversation, and added up their potential earnings and a savings plan for the money.  It was a great lesson in math, planning and the need for hard work.

This is an excerpt of my new About Us page where my children’s contribution to the blog are highlighted for all the world to see just how important they are to the enterprise.

It doesn’t matter what your family business makes for sells. Find a way to involve your children. If you have a law firm or a medical practice, your children can help order supplies for the office, talk about new ways to attract business of help you find interesting industry  articles to read. If your business is plumbing, your children can accompany you to places like Home Depot to check out the types of supplies used for your work.  It is not important to have your children come to your place of business. In fact, children are out-of-place at many workplaces.  The important thing is to find a way to make your children feel they are an important part of what is going on with your business.

In conclusion, you can find serenity in having your children join the family business. So, the question for you this serene day is, how can you involve your children in your family business?

  1. Excellent! I love that your kids are involved in the family business. We have a small real estate business and our daughter records the rents and drafts up the late rent letters. You’ve given me some great ideas for my 10 and 12 year old. Thanks for sharing.

  2. thanks for the lovely post! I am having my first child in February and this is something to remember once they are older!

  3. I love this! My children are always asking for ways to help and this a phenomenal idea to get them involved and motivated….and reiterate I’m not just surfing the Internet.

  4. Great ideas! Right now my kids are very young, but I hope I can include my kids in my business someday!

  5. I like that you have your children involve with your work. When we let our children take part of our work it shows them we believe in them and that they are smart and have ideas we need to respect and pay attention to. This gives our children strength and power.

  6. It really is fun to have them on board. It gives them an example of smart work and shows them they can create something good in the world.

  7. I love this so much. My older kids have helped me during photo shoots and they have also been hand and product models. My husband has been a guest model now and again and recently helped with photography as well. I also have him helping with wording emails as he is a bit more assertive than I am and far less apologetic. My daughter helps the most with my blog, not only as a model, photographer and utensil holder but as a babysitter while I am getting things done so as summer comes to a close she is getting a nice payment for her summer time. I love the idea of giving them positions and a set earning so they are less likely to resent the blog business. Wonderful idea!

  8. I think that is a great idea. I want to get my boys to help me as well and make it a family affair. I want to say how cute your children are and how innovative and ambitious they are for wanting to help. Good for them and for you to allow them that freedom

  9. Wow what a team do you have for your business! I love it! I don’t have kids yet but I hope to incorporate them into every aspect of my life … as I learn I want to teach them. I want them to be forever learning and loving to do it! Thanks for this!

  10. I love the idea of a family business. I know that my oldest son thinks that is what is going to happen with him and his father. 🙂

  11. It’s great that the whole family contributes! I’m sure this will help them prepare for future jobs and skills.

  12. Isa always helps me with my art fairs. She has learned to talk to public and is excellent at customer service. I feel it is such a great life lesson for her to learn to deal with people.

  13. Working together, even if not in business, is a great way to build relationships with those closest to us. I often have my oldest two (ages 5 and 6) help me with projects and love how it sparks conversation.

  14. I love this post! I have been talking to my kids about helping me with my biz. I would love to have them. I think it would be a lot of fun.

  15. Theresa, you are right. When my oldest saw all the work involved with a blog when she moved to a self hosted site she had a new respect for me and what I do. It was worth it just for that.

  16. It’s great when kids get to dive into what mom and dad do. We also love the take your son/daughter to work days. The kids get first hand view of what parents do all day, and walk away with appreciation for what it takes to bring home the paycheck each week.

  17. Thank you for sharing photos of your children! We don’t have kids, but my husband certainly gets involved and joins in the family blogging.

  18. This is fantastic as it teaches our children a good work ethic. It also shows them how hard we work to provide them with needs and fun times.

  19. How wonderful that you’re teaching your kids such strong values. My son wants to help me work all the time, but there’s not much I can let him do just yet.

  20. It’s take your kid to work day, everyday! I love this concept and will definitely be using as my kids get older!

  21. This is so very true! I have my tween daughter working for me to pay for her $40 a month cell line. While she doesn’t get cash in hand, she gets to have an iPhone (with rules/boundaries, etc) but she is able to pay for it by doing some tasks for me and it makes her feel more accomplished and independent. I plan to enlist my step daughter and my daughter into having a teen corner on Happily Blended as a means to share their side of blending a family in a positive way too, ,some day!

  22. This is very true. My kids have been along side me blogging and are my little models for everything. My husband edits my material in his free time. We work hard together.

  23. So does that mean the wages that you pay them are officially a tax write off? I would think it would be so fun to get my kids involved with being frugal.

  24. I love the idea of involving the kids. And I agree with you and Catherine above too (in the comments), kids do come up with some pretty fantastic ideas!

  25. I’ve recently started having my husband be more involved with my blog. I’ve also had my kids do reviews from time to time. One of my twins wants to do fashion posts. Glad to see I’m not alone in my quest to get my family involved in my blogging!

  26. I love this. The minute my kids are old enough, I am putting them to work. Right now, they can go get stuff from the printer. That’s about it! LOL!

  27. Fantastic! I love that you are working together as a group, and as a family too. What a great way to bond with your adorable children..

  28. I absolutely love this. I love that your blog is a family endeavour and each person has a say in it. It must make it that more exciting.

  29. Getting your kids involved in the family business is great. Once I get my Beachbody business further along, my daughter said she will let me teach her and do it with me.

  30. My son takes the most ownership because he wants to supervise everyone else’s work. My photographer daughter is now going photo crazy and I am looking forward to seeing what she will share with us.

  31. The kids are all doing jobs they wanted and asked to have. They are territorial about the work they do so it is interesting to watch them in action.

  32. That is adorable! I love your staff! I also try to get my son involved, after all he loves the perks from blogging, so he can help!

  33. I think it is wonderful that your kids have gotten involved in your blog. My oldest daughter is thinking about a career in social media. I have suggested she start her own fashion blog on tumblr. What a great role model your children are lucky enough to have.

  34. I love that you’re getting your kids to help out. I firmly believe that kids should help out with whatever they can within the family. I see too many kids just running wild, never helping, never contributing to the household. While I know that kids need to be free to play and have fun, they also need to learn the value of work and helping out.

  35. What a great idea to find a role for each of them in support of the blog. Their fresh perspective probably prompts you to try all kinds of new things.

  36. Every member of our family owns their own business so we are all very involved in each other’s business. It helps grow your family and teach kids valuable lessons.

  37. I would love to get my son more involved as he gets older (he isn’t quite 3.) I definitely don’t want to shelter him from my blog business. And he’s been to my office a few times (my day job.) I try to bring him along to any events I throw for work, just so he can see my “other” world.

  38. I wish my kids were old enough to work for me. My son does an article from time to time but other than that they are a hit or miss. I need to switch with a parent who has a teenager lol

  39. This is really great,I always respect families that all work together I think it makes for a much stronger and happier family.

  40. I get my kids involved, too! They are smaller, but love to feel like they are helping out.

  41. I love this! Getting your kids to take ownership of your business gives them a sense of participation and accomplishment in the “grown-up” world. And your patience in having them on board must be commended, too. It’s so easy as an adult to say “I’ll do it,” instead of letting children work out what they’re trying to accomplish.

  42. It says a lot about you as a human being, that your kids want to join you in this. 🙂

  43. Adorable! What a fun way for your children to learn and explore a potential career of their own!

  44. Catherine, you are correct! My kids talked with me about responsive headers, letting readers know I responded to their comments and on changing themes. It is surprising how many good ideas kids come up with when you let their minds roam free.

  45. I think this is awesome in so many ways. Not only does it mean that your family is being connected together and sharing goals, but it also installing the entrepreneurial spirit in them. Kids can learn so many lessons on an entrepreneurial journey.

Kids also have a different view of the world and I’m sure they will be able to come up with lots of new exciting ideas that you would not have thought of.
