“Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” Steven Covey
The world is increasingly becoming a smaller place. In our hands we have the ability to speak with and write to people from all across the world. As we encounter more people with their varied cultures and experiences we need to have the ability to understand new things. We must learn how to understand and appreciate people, things and customs that we are not used to encountering. One way to do this is to take steps to improve our intellect.
Steven Covey is well-known for his book “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.” One of the lines I remember most from his book is the line “seek first to understand, then to be understood.” It makes sense doesn’t it? We cannot get other people to understand us if we do not understand how others think and what matters to them it is hard for us to get them to understand us. In order to be happier, more connected and better able to not just survive, but to thrive in the modern world we must understand others. Our intellect is what enable us to understand why a person thinks and feels a certain way. Intellect does not make us agree, but it does help us to understand the perspective of others.
Perhaps having a big intellect is the new big thing.
When children are in school, often they teased and bullied if they are seen as “too smart.” Fear of being teased or bullied causes some children to pretend they don’t know answers or to intentionally do poorly on tests. If your childhood was spent either being teased for having a good intellect or teasing others for having a good intellect, you may not have the proper respect for intellect. If this is the case, it is time for a new way of doing things. Take action now to increase your intellect read books, travel, talk with people, seek out ways to learn more about the world and the people in it.
