Learn to Love to Read

It is sensational  to love to read. At its simplest level, reading is the act of looking at groups  of letters , determining   that the letters are words and purring those words  together to convey  information. Most people learn to read when they are children. In the beginning we learn to read so we can learn.  Later we read so we can learn. The truly fortunate among us, begin to read simply for the joy of reading.

Today we   have many reading options in both paper books and  ebooks. You can choose to read on your computer, ebook, or even a telephone. My persons al favorite is to read paper books, but most of my reading is done via my eReader . I must admit I like the power of having over 2,000 books in my hand at any given time!

Why should you read? There are almost as many answers to that question as there are readers. You should read to learn. You should read to have things to talk about. You should read to get new stories to tell. You should read to have adventures. You should read for the sheer joy of it. The why doesn’t   matter, just read.

Studies have shown that children who read at least 20 minutes per day will do markedly better in school than their peers who do not. Just as reading is good for children, it is good for adults. It is a good idea to take time to read as often as possible. Part of the joy of reading is that you do not have to read any particular kind of book. Reading is not just for the well-educated. There are books on every topic at almost any reading level. Reading us one of the most egalitarian or equal experiences people can have.

I read each day, books, magazines, newspapers and blogs each day. Some I read for business. I want to be a better writer, a better motivator, a better photographer, a better wife and mother. I read books to help me with all these things. I like knitting, calculus and mystery stories. I read to keep up to date and enjoy these things. I want to learn to cook vegetarian meals so I read magazines for tips. I am a fan of politics so I read political publications to see what my democrats are doing and to watch out for the republicans. I read, I read, I read.

It is sensational to love reading. So the question for you this sensational day is how do you feel about reading?

Why I Love to Read

When I was a child, children’s television shows taught me that reading is fundamental. Today, Dora the Explorer teaches my children that if they want to learn something, they should “take a look in a book.”  I have always found books to be a source of adventure. The first adventure story I remember from my childhood was Dr. Seuss’ And to Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street. I liked hearing the story the child created about wondrous adventures on the way home from school. As a teenager I fell in love with The Bourne Identity and  its sequels. When I become a young woman and moved into my own apartment, I lived alone for the first time in my life. Things were so quiet. I read books then because they kept me company. The characters in the books sometimes became friends that kept me company and made living alone seem not quite as scaryWhen I was a child, children’s television shows taught me that reading is fundamental. Read While Standing in Line

It is sensational to find a fun thing to do while standing in line. For me the fun thing to do while standing in line is read a book. Everyone stands in line for something at one time or another. We go to the market, bank, car wash, clothing store all kinds of places. I have seen people do all kinds of things while standing in line:

  • paint fingernails
  • argue with kids
  • comb hair
  • pay bills
  • talk on the cell phone
All of those things have their place in life.
