Love – Satisfying Work and a Good Family

It is fantastic to have satisfying work and a good family.

Readers of a certain age will remember the movie Mahogany  starring Diana Ross and Billie Dee Williams. There was a great line in the movie where Billie Dee’s character told Diana Ross’ character that all her success at work meant nothing if she had no one at home with whom to share it. For me, having a loving, caring family at home to share my successes and accomplishments is more valuable than the accomplishments and successes.

I like to call myself a Proverbs Wife. For those not familiar with the Bible, this is the wife described in Proverbs 31, verses 10 to 31. She is a wonderful woman who has it all together. Here are a few of her qualities:

  • she is more precious than rubies
  • she is trusted by her husband
  • she keeps her home adequately supplied
  • she is strong and in good physical shape
  • she dresses beautifully
  • she operates businesses
  • she is honorable
  • she has a reputation for virtue
  • she has a good reputation that proceeds her

When you look at that list, you see a woman who has satisfying work and a good family. Continue reading →

Sensational Saturday – Good for You Books – The Bible

Sensational Saturday – it is sensational to read a book that is good for you!

Throughout the month of December, each Sensational Saturday article will be about a book that has been around for a while and is good for you. Some books we read for fun, just pure enjoyment and we do not care if we learn anything.  There are other books  full of intelligent, well thought out ideas, but are so boring, we want to put them down and not wait to get to the point. The books in the December Sensational Saturday series are books that I have found to be both good for you and fun or interesting to read. The books that we be spotlighted are the following:

  • The Bible
  • Outliers
  • Think and Grow Rich
  • The Greatest Salesman in the World
  • Guess How Much I Love You
These are all books I have read more than once and find myself recommending to other people repeatedly.   Let’s start with the first book on the list, the Bible. I am a born-again Christian woman, but that is not why I am recommending the Bible today. I am recommending it because the Bible has been around longer than most books.  Parts of it have been copied and adapted by more people than we can count over the course of time. It is interesting to read the Bible and then see parts of it copied in other works of art and literature.
Throughout high school and college my teachers and professors told me on numerous occasions how the plays and sonnets were taken from Bible stories.  For example, look at the similarities between Pilate and Lady McBeth with the hand washing.  Check out the similarities between Sodom and Gomorrah and much of trashy reality television. The Bible tells us there is nothing new under the sun and on television, there are 200 channels and 190 0f them are showing re-runs!
I often joke with my husband that one of our favorite singers, Fred Hammond, just opens the Bible at random and starts singing what ever he finds on the page. Fred Hammond has a song, we are blessed, the words:
We are blessed in the city blessed in the fields
Blessed when we com and when we go
We cast down every stronghold sickness and poverty must cease
The devil is defeated
And we are blessed
Doesn’t that look an awful lot like this passage from the 28th chapter of Deuteronomy:
Blesed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field . . .
Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out
The Lord shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face: they shall come out against thee one way, and shall flee before thee seven ways.
When you get a chance, check out the Bible not as a religious book, this time take a look at it as a cure for writer’s block!  So the question or you this Sensational Saturday is what book do you turn to spur your creative juices?

Sensational Saturday – My Favorite Books – The Good Book

Sensational Saturday – it is sensational to curl up with the Good Book and learn you are awesome!

Each Sensational Saturday throughout the month of November I will be sharing some of my favorite books with you.  I am a bibliophile, that means I am a lover of books. I have more than a thousand books on my office shelves. I have at least that many on the shelves, tables and floors of my house. Then there is my Kindle 3G that has more than 3,000 books. I really like books. So for a book to make the list and be included in the November Sensational Saturday series, they have to have stood the test of time and be special in my heart.

Over the course of the next few Sensational Saturdays,  I will share the following books with you:

  • The Bible by God
  • The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum
  • The Collected Works of Langston Hughes by Langston Hughes
  • Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison

I would like to share my favorites with you and to have you share some of your favorites as well.

I am a Christian wife and mother before all else. Therefore it probably come as no surprise to you that my favorite book of all times is the Bible. No matter how many times I read it, I see something new and understand something a little better or find a new way to apply what I read. My favorite piece of the Bible is Proverbs 31: 10-31. It talks about the most treasured, most precious woman. She is often referred to as the Proverbs Wife.

I am sharing the words from Proverbs 31: 10-31 with you here. I challenge you to read these words and not be impressed with this woman.

10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

13 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

14 She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

19 She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

24 She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.

31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates

Let’s look at this woman objectively so I can share with you why I am so impressed with her. First of all you are told right from the door that she is virtuous which means she has or show she has high moral standards. In the same sentence you are told she is worth more than precious jewels. She is trustworthy and he husband can depend upon her without fear. The virtuous woman works and makes good decisions regarding her finances. She keeps her household well stocked and she stays in good physical health. This woman dresses beautifully and in fine attire. She spreads only good thoughts about her husband out in the world. The words that come forth from her mouth are wise and she is known for her kind words. There are all kinds of good and wonderful women, but the Proverbs Wife is better than them all. She earns her pay and her reputation speaks for itself. This woman was amazing back when these words were originally written and she is amazing today.

The Bible is my favorite book because it is full of passages like this one that pick me up and give me strength and courage when I need it. It is my favorite book because I never tire of reading it and I enjoy the words each time. This is a book that makes me happy to be me because reading it makes me feel loved and surrounded by comfort and comforters. It is sensational to curl up in bed with the Good Book and spend a little time. So the question for you this Sensational Saturday is what is a book that stands  the test of time for you?
