You can find serenity in realizing that big dreams can come from small starts like the 52 Week Savings Challenge. The beginning of the new year is always a time for big plans, big dreams, and big talk. Unfortunately, after a few weeks, those big dreams are often forgotten. Later they are looked back at with regret and disappointment. One big reason for this disappointment is that people do not really understand those big things can start with small steps.

One of the great things about the 52 week savings challenge is that you can start it at any time of the year. You don’t have to be held to a calendar in order to start or end anything.

Often big dreams cost big money. A problem arises when the dreamer does not have the money to make the big dream come true. If this has ever happened to you, you can avoid this happening by starting to save.

For example, if the house you want to buy requires you to bring $10,000 to the closing table. You have $10 in your checking account. That dream will not be coming true for you today. But that does not mean your dream will never come true. You can make that dream come true by taking small steps, one after another until you reach your finish line.

Use Your Phone as a Bullet Journal or Personal Organizer

One way to do that is with the popular 52 Week Savings Plan. A common savings plan making the rounds is the 52-week savings plan that requires participants to save one dollar for each week of the year. This that on the first week of the year, one dollar. During the second week, two dollars are saved. During the third week, three dollars are saved. This method is repeated all year. until fifty-two dollars are saved and on the fifty-second week of the year, fifty-two dollars are saved.

Over the course of the year, more than $1,350 is saved. This is a nice start to the $10,000 you need to purchase your house. The important thing is that this plan starts you saving. It is a way to make savings a regular part of your life. If you save each week of the year you establish a habit of savings and the character of a person who can defer satisfaction in order to reach a goal.

Do not laugh at the small amounts saved with this 52 weeks Savings Challenge. A few years ago a group of writers in a social media group I belong to wanted to participate in this challenge. They were all excited about being able to save more than $1,300 over the course of a year. The excitement wavered and was dampened by a few well-to-do members of the group who laughed and said this plan was a nice way to save for shoe money, but not for any real goal.

Those well-to-do women were so wrong! If you are a person who has very limited funds, start the plan at $1.00 for the first week and continue from there. People who are more well-to-do start at $100.00 for the first week and continue from there. If you are somewhere in the middle, start there. The big idea here is to start and maintain a savings plan. The big idea is to start saving money, not the amount of money you save.

Q. How do you eat an elephant_ A. One bite at a time.

The key with plans like this one is not what you start with, the key is that you actually start. That big dream you have is within your reach, don’t be discouraged if it takes you many steps to get there. Just move and keep moving. You will get there. Never make light of small starts, big things come from small starts.  The church girl in me is obligated to tell you that the Bible says, faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains!

“Don’t be upset because you are starting small, just start and keep going.”

You can find serenity in realizing that big dreams can come from small starts like the 52 Week Savings Challenge. So, the question for you this serene day is, what big dream are you going to take small steps towards achieving today?

  1. I have some friends that are planning on doing this, but like you said it’s hard to stick with it. So, they are going to do it in reverse! They will put more money in in the beginning.

  2. This is such great advice. Too many people try to tackle big challenges all at once instead of tackling what they are capable of!

  3. That would be a great savings plan to show a young person just starting out to get them in the habit now!

  4. A lot of people like the reverse idea. I guess it is because you get the big amounts out early and then just do smaller amounts as the year goes on.

  5. I’m going to share this with my husband, we have been trying to find easy ways to save and this is a great start! Thank you.

  6. I tried the challenge last year but didn’t get far. I hope this year will be much better!

  7. This is great. This s one of the ways I saved over $30k last yr. It works, especially if you are disciplined.

  8. I guess saving $1300 would be shoe money for some, but I think it’s a great way to start saving. But I have to say, I could never actually walk on $1300 shoes!

  9. I love this! I’m going to print it out right now and commit to doing it! This would be a great way to pay for Christmas next year without having to touch our regular bank account!

  10. I tried doing this last year and failed. I’m going to get my kids involved to keep me accountable. Hopefully that will work!

  11. This is such great advice. Too many people try to tackle big challenges all at once instead of tackling what they are capable of!

  12. This is such a great idea. Saving $1300 is nothing to sneeze at!

  13. this chart is the best. I did it last year an decided this year to do it backwards to make it easier on my wallet and christmas time.

  14. I have some friends that are planning on doing this, but like you said it’s hard to stick with it. So, they are going to do it in reverse! They will put more money in in the beginning.
