Work and Home Balance – Encourage Your Employees to Do It

African American women and the words - Don't try to have it all, instead get all from what you have.
African American women and the words - Don't try to have it all, instead get all from what you have. For work and home balance.

It is fantastic to run a business where the employees have learned to properly balance work and home. At least once per year there is a big uproar when one “expert” or another  writes a big article on how modern women are struggling to “have it all.”

Typically the articles have a lot of moaning and complaining. They talk about the need for balance and how impossible it is to balance one’s work life and home life. The articles try to show how impossible it is to have it all. Smart entrepreneurs and supervisors know that employees are better workers when they are not overwhelmed by their responsibilities at work and at home.

When employees do not have a healthy understanding of how to balance their work and home responsibilities, they are less productive at work and more resentful at home. When employees are more resentful at home they become disillusioned and more troublesome at work.  For these reasons, it is in an entrepreneur’s or supervisor’s best interest to encourage employees to balance effectively.

Out of necessity, the work must be divided into more than one day. Entrepreneurs and supervisors at work need to encourage employees to learn to balance their responsibilities at home and work. Employees need to learn this lesson and learn how to work smarter rather than just harder. Balance is not just a cute word. It is not a slogan. The idea of work and life balance is an important concept.

Employees who feel appreciated, valued, and seen at work tend to stay longer at their jobs. This means that training costs go down. Retention costs go down. Employee loyalty and morale go up. If you want to succeed as an entrepreneur, look for ways to recognize your employees have lives and important things to do outside of work. Recognize this and give space for it. You will be glad you did.

In conclusion, it is fantastic to run a business where the employees have learned to properly balance work and home. So, the question for you this fantastic day is how do you make it work?

  3. Great quote! When you work from home, it’s difficult to stick to a “quitting time” and punch out. My husband, who also works from home, reminds me when I don’t remember to walk away from the computer.

  4. My work life balance stinks. I always like popping here for a dose of common sense inspiration. This was so needed.

  5. it’s always about balance. This weekend was a mix of low key and hectic but it was one of the best weekends in a long time

  6. I couldn’t agree more! In a very tangible sense, I have been playing with this idea, as far as going through my home and rearranging and re-purposing items that will be better used in other rooms or spaces. It makes everything much more functional!

  7. The balance is so important. I really get annoyed sometimes at my work because people don’t know how to balance and stay at work until too late.

  8. I balance work and home by prioritizing. Work is important, but it will never take the place of my family.

  9. Corporate life is better when employers realize that happy employees who have good and satisfying home lives are better employees.

  10. I work at home also and it is SO HARD to balance it all. I must strictly adhere to the calendar and to do list or I am a mess.

  11. I work at a home office also and it is hard to balance it all when you are at home. It is a different struggle than for those who work outside the home and at home.

  12. It is so hard to balance all the responsibilities we have. I wish you every success with leaving the corporate job and starting to run your own new personal training business. Please stop back by and let me know how it works out.

  13. I was just talking to my fiance about this topic last night! Love the quote you shared.

  14. It’s the hardest to balance when you work away from home. I’m blessed to work from home and as such can easily change my work time around family.

  15. It’s so hard to balance work and real life. Great when a company actually encourages it.

  16. Totally agree! Finding balance and prioritizing is so important. It’s important for all of to do this at home or work.

  17. what a true and profound statement. I am a big believer that there are no excuses when you want success. You use what you have

  18. I watched this balance disappear at my old employer. It’s interesting to watch it happen over the course of years and see how negatively it affects the company.

  19. I need to balance work better with family things. I need to take more time away from work.

  20. Because I work from home, my work/life balance is a mess! I can never focus on one or the other. Usually I feel like I am not doing my best at either one 🙁

  21. I get overwhelmed sometimes and really struggle with this. Great advice and something to really think about 🙂

  22. I’m learning as I go, I used to be a pro at it when I held the same job for many years. It’s funny how things change you think never will. 🙂 I like the quote you have up about getting your all from something.

  23. I continue to struggle with this and I am the only employee

  24. The department I manage is going through a lot of changes. I keep reinforcing that everyone needs to relax and get some R&R.

  25. I work at home but it can be pretty chaotic, so I found out closing the door until everything is done, is the only way to actually have some work done

  26. Working from home this is so hard, but I am working on finding a better balance.

  27. That is a great quote. People should definitely learn to be happy with what they have.

  28. I have a hard time balancing work and home sometimes. I try to set time aside just to spend with my family, and that helps.

  29. This is a great quote. I am tempted to compare myself to others but I need to do my best with what I have.

  30. I love that quote. I struggle to balance life and kids and house- throw work it it and I feel like i’m drowning sometimes.

  31. I DON’T balance very well. Work tends to take over. I need better boundaries. Love the quote and tweeted.

  32. It is so important to balance things between working full time and being self employed as a Beachbody coach. By the end of the year though, I plan to ditch the corporate job and coach and personal train full time.

  33. since I have gone to work full time, it’s much harder to balance! I reserve the hours after work for the kids. Once they are in bed I do my thing. They get every other weekend to do whatever they want. On the off weekends, they get one day. Saturday mornings are for housecleaning.

  34. Right now I’m a stay at home mom so it’s a little easier for me to balance blogging and home. My husband hasn’t quite figured out a balance yet and it’s really hard.

  35. That is a pretty awesome quote and how I try to live my life. I wish all employers were in tune with this philosophy.

  36. I wish my husband’s boss thought this way, but more and more companies want just the opposite. They want blood! It’s so important.

  37. Yes! It is hard balancing work and home when you work at home. I will be happy when I am earning enough to afford a housekeeper.

  38. I want to find a way to manage my time better to have more balance. I want to also start my own business but need a strong foundation. Thanks for this!

  39. I am still new to the idea of working from home. Balancing the kids and the blog is crazy! You can forget the laundry- I need housekeeper!

  40. I don’t think there will ever be a true balance. More of doing the best I can with what I DO do and saying no to more of the other stuff!

  41. ‘Don’t try to have it all, instead get all from what you have.” is an awesome quote. Definitely good words to live by.

  42. This is very timely for me! I’ve recently been looking at my schedule and looking for way to streamline my routine and say NO to things that are outside of my priorities.

  43. As a work from home mom, I can honestly say that my biggest challenge is finding balance. It is so easy to blur the line between work and family time. It is something that I have to think about every single day.

  44. What a great quote. Working from home is quite the challenge!

  45. It’s hard to work from home- so many distractions! But I find when I get into a rhythm, I’m successful. It’s also about picking out the best times to work -when I’m most productive, and that’s a challenge.

  46. I work at home and I struggle every day to find balance. I wish I could get better at it because I always feel like I am letting someone or something down.

  47. It is hard to balance work from home and personal life. Both Mr. M and I are entrepreneurs which requires us to work a lot of hours. Even on vacation we have to put in some work to continue to run our business.

  48. I’m lucky enough to work from home -but like @helenebludman:disqus says, finding a balance is often hard to do! I wish working from home was more of an option for corporations, but I think the trend is finally becoming more mainstream.

  49. It is often hard to do, but you know what they say: no one ever said on his deathbed “I wish I had worked more hours.”

  50. We have no home work balance.. because we are both entrepreneurs and work from home. When you work for yourself, or you are the boss, you put in 80 hours a week, which can’t be contained, even in a home office.

  51. I don’t really know how I do it to be honest LOL. It just kind of happens and I am thankful for that.
