Sometimes Being an Entrepreneur is Hard Work

sometimes being an entrepreneur is hard work
Sometimes being a grown up requires hard work, but the rewards for successfully completing the hard work are magnificent.

I spent the weekend helping my husband complete a ridiculously large amount of work for a company where he words as Vice President of Business Development. I did not want to spend the weekend doing this work. I wanted to finish knitting a computer case I was trying to complete. However, the work had to be done and my skills were needed to get the job done. So, I showed up like a grown up and got the job done.

It was difficult work, contracts, creating of companies, research into Internal Revenue Service regulations and the like. It was intellectually challenging because there was a lot of information to compile, a lot of research to be done and definitely a test of my 75 words per minute typing skills. However, as I write this post on Monday morning, the work is done and paychecks should be coming in a few days. Showing up like a grown up and getting a job done completely and correctly is a magnificent thing!

As entrepreneurs, we often want to spend the weekends, evenings and holidays enjoying our family. We want free time to read, knit and enjoy our hobbies. We don’t want to work during those times. However, the reality is that for some entrepreneurs, work has to be done in the evenings, on the weekends or on holidays. The work has to be done because the responsibilities of an entrepreneur often do not fit a strict 9 to 5 schedule. Entrepreneurs must step up and show up like grown ups to do what is needed to keep their businesses operating.

If you are called upon to put on your entrepreneurial hat outside of normal business hours, do not get upset. Do not hate your business, your business partners or your employees. Instead, look at it as an opportunity to rise to the occasion and do what needs to be done. There is satisfaction, reward and honor in doing the right thing at the right time.

Take a moment now to look at your life. Look at your business. When it is time to show up and get work done for your business. Are you willing to do it? Do you give to your business happily or do you resent having to work outside of normal hours? If working outside normal hours makes you feel resentful, take time to examine why? Once you know why you are resentful, find ways to look at your business, not as something to resent, but something to enjoy and be proud exists.
