Learn How to Supervise Employees

 

If you want to succeed as an entrepreneur with employees, you must learn how to supervise employees.

As a business grows and becomes more successful, it becomes necessary to hire employees. Once you hire employees and train them you cannot set them loose on the world. You must supervise your employees.

When it comes to supervising employees there are many approaches. Some popular approaches include:

  • Micro-manage
  • Free-range
  • Confidence and competence creation

 

Of course, each of these approaches has pluses and minuses. Pick the approach that works best for you and your business and work it to the best of your ability. Keep in mind you don’t have to stick with an approach if it doesn’t serve you well. Simply drop it and pick another. *** Spoiler Alert*** : My favorite supervisory method is to train my employees to work with confidence and competence.

 

Micro-manage

Supervisors who micro-manage their teams are involved in every aspect of their employees’ work. Employees do not make a move or a decision without supervisory approval. Insecure supervisors end to prefer to micro-manage their employees. Employees who are micro-managed do exactly what their supervisors want – no more, no less. The problem is that these employees find it hard to grow and develop in their positions. They aren’t trained to think and problem solve. This means when they are called upon to do it later, they have to learn on the spot. When you have not been trained to learn on the spot, this is a very difficult thing to do.

Free-range

Employees supervised under a free-range method are able to do whatever they see fit to do. These employees are taught the rules and regulations of the job and if they choose to follow them, great. If they choose not to follow them, that is great as well. When employees are supervised in a free-range manner, their actions are hard to predict. Some people in the department will do things one way. At the same time, other people in the same department will do things in a completely different manner. There is no way to predict what will happen.

Confidence and competence creation

When employees are supervised with the goal of having employees who are confident and competent, things are a little different. These employees are taught that they can do the jobs for which they were hired. It is emphasized that they are qualified to do the work and that is why they were asked to be part of the team. These employees know that if they do their jobs, their employment status is secure. This gives them a large reason to be confident.

When employees are trained to be competent, they are given all the necessary training to do their jobs before they start. In addition, they are provided with quality training on a regular basis after they are hired. These employees know that they are expected to be competent at their jobs and will be given the tools necessary to develop that confidence. Because these employees are trained to competent, they have confidence in their ability to o their jobs. It is hard to beat the work product produced by a confident and competent employee.
