Verizon FIOS may be just the cure you need for a problem that most parents are facing right now. School is officially over and it is time for the “I’m bored Mom, what can I do” season to begin all across the nation. I have experienced this season many times and have come up with a cure that works at our house. Feel free to adapt it to work at your house.
What is FIOS?
FIOS is fiber optic technology delivered to your house. Fiber Optics is different from cable because it uses light to transfer video and data signals directly to your home. Verizon FIOS’ fiber-optic network is the reason FIOS is able to give great performance and reliable service. Fiber optics are less susceptible to weather and is immune to electrical disruptions. Verizon FIOS has three products that you can order separately or in a great bundle like I did. The pieces are:
- internet
- telephone
- television
When it comes to the internet, the bandwidth capacity is greater which is a must have if you have a large family with lots of electronics like mine. FIOS internet comes in several speed options. Check out the following list:
50/50 Mbps – this allows you to upload and download in a flash. It allows you to play games and stream videos virtually lag-free
100/100 Mbps – among the fastest broadband speeds. It allows you to download movies in mere minutes, upload photos in seconds and effortlessly use all your devices at once.
150/150 Mbps – this premier speed is for serious internet users. This is great if you have multiple devices doing intense activities all at once.
300/300 Mbps – this speed is great for multiple hardcore internet users. Use this to connect all your devices and push them hard.
500/500 Mbps – this is Verizon FiOS’ supersonic speed. If you have lots of users and lots of devices downloading, uploading, streaming and sharing files all at the same time. This one is for you.
The home phone service is great and you can even forward your home phone to your smart phone so you don’t miss important calls when you have to leave the house for summer fun! No more sitting and staring at the phone lie in the old days. The television service is amazing and allows you to watch television on your actual television or on your tablet or smartphone!
When it comes to beating boredom and having #NoBoredKids, the internet is my favorite of the Verizon FIOS services. I set my kids up for summer school at home and the lightning fast Verizon internet is helping me like you would not believe. First, I created a spreadsheet to schedule summer school activities for the children. Each child has a custom designed program based on grade level, interest and the upcoming school year.
I have used the Verizon FIOS internet to help me with my summer school plans. My youngest daughter has me teaching her Japanese. My son speaks Spanish pretty well. My other daughter wants me to teach her French. I studied French way back in high school. I only know Spanish from reading my children’s homework and I know nothing of Japanese. So, I went to the internet, downloaded books to teach all the languages!
I had each child download school books directly to their e-readers to use for school each day.
All three children will be getting math work done each day. The website www.mathisfun.com is great. It has math for my 4th graders and my 8th grader. The activities are timed and can be custom created for each child’s skill level. Winning!
For all the other classes I am really enjoying www.quizlet.com. This website has quizzes for EVERYTHING. No matter what you are trying ot learn from a new language to the real estate exam to 8th grade history, there is a quizlet already done for you. Not only that you can create your own quizlets!
We are also using the internet to have music lessons via YouTube videos. With the television we are using the cooking channel to explore cuisines from around the world. So, before the kids start talking about how bored they are, sign up for one of the Verizon FIOS packages so there will be #NoBoredKids at your house!
FiOS is supposed to be coming to my area soon. I will probably make the switch because my I internet has issues a lot of the time. I love all these activities!!
Vios left our market not too long ago so I’m sad. However, I’ve heard nothing about good things from this service.
My kids know better than to be bored. The word “bored” will earn you the opportunity to do extra chores in our house. lol. I wish Verizion fios was available here. I would be using it to keep myself entertained.
My kids started with “i’m bored” the first day they were out! I haven’t heard of FIOS yet, sounds great!
I have heard so many great things about Verizon. I love that the kids can utilize it as well as the adults.
It’s great how quickly it moves along and helps you maintain efficiency. I hope the kids enjoy summer school this year!
My kids would love this. I wish it was available in my area! Can’t wait until it is!
verizon is such a great brand. my stepmom totally stands by it and has the service for 10 years +
I think it’s great that your kids are working on learning foreign languages over the summer. FIOS does seem to make it easy with all the features they have to offer!
It does get hard on my kids sometimes when they get bored in these long summer days. This is a great solution, thanks!
This sounds very useful! I have never used Verizon but have heard great things.
I just might have to look into this.
Those are some FAST speeds they offer. We’re stuck with a whole 20M download speed which sometimes lags. Maybe FIOS will come to Alaska in the future.
I think I’m going to have to consider switching my internet. We have tons of electronics and when everyone is home and using them, I can definitely tell a difference in our internet speed.
I tell you what, I have been so thankful for tech toys, etc this Summer. They are the only things that have given me some peace and quiet so far. These kids… are driving me nuts
I have Verizon FIOS and love it. I’ve had it for 7 or 8 years now and will never switch.
I am still waiting for FIOS to come to our area. It will be exciting to have choices!
This looks like a great option. The speed is very impressive.
This looks like a lot of fun. I’ve heard a bit about this but I never knew what It was. Thanks!
Those are pretty good speed times! This sounds great, I will look into verizon fios more! Thank you!
That sounds like really great specs! Definitely something I would consider for my 10-year-old niece.
I love all the things we can do on our cell phones and so do my kids! They really help out in a pinch when bored!
I love your summer schedule! I need to do something similar for my daughter even though she’s still a toddler.
That’s great your kids are doing summer school. Sounds like they are learning a lot and staying busy!
i know my friends kiddies would love this…they loved being entertained especially on long drives
My father has Verizon FiOs and I am ever so jealous we don’t have service in our area. I can attest to the reliability and speed of the services! We will be switching over as soon as it comes to our neighborhood!
I know my son would love this especially when we are in the car. He has an iPad but there is no wifi option. As he gets older I will probably get him something like this! It looks like it would be a lot of fun!
This seems like it would be a lot of fun, my daughter would love it. With all of the summer days at home, I think this would be great for us.
