Operate Your Business as if There is Something to Learn

The method you use to “can” or store the lessons learned for your business does not matter. Keep in mind the list of storage methods listed above is not all-inclusive. There are a myriad of ways to store lessons you learn in your business. Pick a method that works best for your organization. For example, if you are a sole proprietor, handwriting the notes in a notebook may be sufficient. A notebook is an easy way to keep track of lessons and can be used with ease. When you are the only person at the business, you may not have the time, energy or expertise to use other storage methods and that is okay. The important thing is to store the knowledge. The storage method is not crucial.

If you have a larger organization with employees it may be a good idea to write the lessons using your word processor and save them in the cloud to be accessed by your employees. There are many benefits to storing the lessons your business learns on your computer and in the cloud. The lessons are easily accessible and you do not have to worry about them being lost or misplaced. Lessons stored in this manner will be easy to read, neat and orderly. Another benefit to using a word processor is that the lessons can be printed and distributed to employees as you desire. If you are so inclined, these lessons can be revised, put into book form and offered for sale. This potential revenue stream is not suitable for every business, but it is a nice possibility for some business owners.

For some organizations, it may be a good idea to create videos of the lessons and share them with employees on a regular basis. Often lessons are more easily remembered if they are seen rather than heard or read. Video lessons often bring principles and ideas to life in a way that other mediums do not. Keep in mind if you want to store lessons via video for your business you do not have to go through a major video production process. With modern technology, you can sit in front of your computer, tablet device or even telephone and record a video lesson that will be beneficial for your business. If you decide to do a video recording of business lessons, keep it simple. Simply sit or stand in front of your video device and talk to your employees or business partners. Do not worry about editing, music or fancy scene changes. Just share the lesson, stop recordIng, save the recording and move on to the next project.

No matter what storage method you choose, it is important to keep in mind that the storing of the lessons should not hinder business operations, but enhance them. You are storing the lessons so you can use them later. Select a storage method that will enable you to make storing lessons a habit your business always practices. If the method you use is to cumbersome, hard or intimidating, you will stop storing the lessons. This is an area where you can do what works best for you and your business. You do not have to do what your competitors are doing. Take time to select the best storage method for your business and keep in mind ease of storage and future usability. The goal is to save lessons so they can be used later. The goal is not to win an Emmy, Oscar or Grammy award.  The process is simple, learn the lesson, save the lesson and use the lesson. You will be glad you did.

Look at your business and your industry, make a list of things you would like to learn. Then take time to figure out where you can go to learn those things. At the same time, always be on the look out for new things to learn about your business and industry. So, the question for you this thrilling day is, what was the last thing you learned that helped you in your business?
