You can find serenity in knowing the family that learns together stays together. Everyone has heard the expression, “The family that prays together stays together.” I think we can add to that one, “the family that learns together stays together.” Participating in learning activities is a great way for family members to bond. Keep in mind, the learning activities do not have to be academic in nature.
Here is a list of a few things my family has learned together:
– how to combine things to create inventions aka play Little Alchemy
– what happens when you mix Mentos candies and various forms of cola
– how to knit
– proper procedure for dying your hair with Kool Aid
– how to jailbreak Android devices
All of these activities were fun and helped bring us closer together.
For example, when my husband and son discovered the Google Chrome game Little Alchemy, our family spent an entire weekend combining fire, water, earth and other elements to create things. It was so much fun, pure simple fun. We learned a lot about science, how the world works and even how each family member thinks. For example, my son is logical and he thought about the combinations he would make. I am determined and pragmatic. As a result, I spent my time trying every possible combination. Each family member, even the twins who were five at the time, was able to come up with a combination that no one else thought of, it was great.
By playing a game, we learned and learned together. On another occasion, when we did the Mentos and cola experiment, we did it outside in the backyard of a vacation home in New Orleans. We had silly fun, made a mess in an easy to clean area and learned. While on vacation the children learned that the temperature and sugar content of beverages makes a difference in how the beverage reacts to various stimuli. I highly suggest you engage in some fun activities like the ones listed above with your family. You may be surprised at what you learn about science, the world and each of your family members.
The Family That Learns Together Stays Together
In conclusion, you can find serenity in making learning a regular part of family life. So, the question for you this serene day is, what are you and your family members going to learn today?
