New Idea – Be Grateful for Work

African American woman smiling and the words "New Idea - Be Grateful for Work"

Here is a new idea for some people, be grateful for work. Even if you hate your job and are on the way out, be grateful. It is a good thing to have work and the benefits it brings.

It is wonderful to have a new attitude and be grateful for work. At the start of the new year, people all around the world make resolutions, affirmations, and promises about what they will do differently in the new year. Many people who have jobs they do not like but must go to every day.

The reality for many people, this that they will be working at jobs they do not like for an extended period of time. The job will not change. However, these people do not have to continue to be miserable. They can make a change while working at the same time. What they can do is adopt an attitude of gratitude. They can start being grateful to have employment.

Each day people lose jobs or search for a new job without success. No matter how horrible your job is and no matter how much you wish you were not on the job, there is someone who would love to have your job. Your job is not a curse. Your job is not a hindrance. Your job is not what is keeping you from getting where you want to go.
The problem is your attitude. If you start with an attitude of gratitude and are truly happy that you have work, you will look at the day differently. Let’s look at two situations, those who are ungrateful for work and those who are grateful for work.

Ungrateful for work

  • you start the day with a bad attitude
  • each day you complain about having to go to work
  • you show up at work just in time to start work before the supervisor begins to complain
  • you make numerous personal calls throughout the day
  • you complain about having to work
  • you are reluctant to do any assignment without being asked repeatedly
  • you spend work time on social media
  • you end the day with a bad attitude

Grateful for work

  • you start the day with a good attitude
  • if you don’t have something nice to say about  your job, you keep your mouth shut
  • you show up each day early enough so that you are at your work station at start time, not at the front door
  • you keep personal calls to a minimum
  • you state you are happy to have a job to come to each day
  • you do your assignments when asked and do them to completion
  • you save your personal web browsing for home
  • you end the day with a good attitude
As you start the new year, if you are at a job you hate, go into work with a new attitude and see if it makes a difference in your life. So the question for you this wonderful day is, what attitude are you taking to work with you?

  1. you gotta get your mind right. if that aint right, nothing will be. find SOMETHING to be happy about or thats a loooooong miserable day.

  2. Attitude makes the difference between a good day and a bad one. Attitude is wonderful because you have total control over your attitude.

  3. Even though my job isn’t my dream job…I am so blessed to have this job and it allows me to do fitness before and after hours. I have a HUGE problem with people who do nothing except complain because so many people have it rough and you are very blessed. Every time I want to complain I think about those who don’t even have job, or those forced to participate in activities that are unhealthy. Definitely having an attitude of gratitude in 2013

  4. I told a friend this week that I was jealous of him, since he was off. But I followed up with a text stating that although I would love to be lounging on the couch in my PJs, I am also very blessed to have a job!

  5. You are right each day is not promised and we should treat each day as a gift. I know from personal experience doing something instead of just complaining is hard. Most good things are hard at first, but worth the work!

  6. Good for you Stellar one! We have so much power to create the world in which we live! We should use that power to make the world what we want.

  7. I know a lot of people this morning, including me, where complaining they had to go to work today after a long holiday hiatus. So today, I’ve been saying to myself, “I have to be here anyway. I can choose to make it a pleasant experience or a miserable one.” So far, it’s been pleasant.

  8. I believe you have to start each day with gratitude as it is not promised. I believe that complaining is a waste of energy. If your don’t like something work to change it. The list of ungrateful items will surely step on some toes. Hopefully it will also wake them up:)

  9. Thanks Saidah, I always like when you stop by! My husband always says, “It’s no use complaining, because no one listens.” A good attitude makes things better.

  10. I am always telling people who complain about their jobs that they could have NO JOB. We can’t forget the alternative. If someone hates their job complaining is not going to do a thing but make them and others miserable. This is a great list of contrasting attitudes.
